Behind the Scenes With The X Factor’s Kelly Rowland: How Destiny’s Child Shaped Her and Why Simon Cowell is the ‘Biggest Diva’

Superstar Kelly Rowland welcomed Parade into her dressing room for an intimate look at what happens when the camera is not rolling on set of The X Factor

Walk us through what you do when you arrive on The X Factor set.
“When I come on set, the first thing I do is actually sit in this chair. I like to get a nice cup of ice from Coffee Bean. [Laughs] I usually eat that while I’m getting my makeup done and my hairstylist Cesar does my hair. We sit in here and we talk and Marnie [my stylist] will come in. I’ll have a fitting; she’ll have a gazillion dresses for me to try on and we just chill.”

Let’s go back to this cup of ice business. You eat a cup of ice every day before the show?
“Sometimes it’s two. It just depends. I like ice. I like the texture of the ice. I sound crazy! [Laughs.]”

What do you look for when choosing your clothes for the night? What inspires you?
“I’m pretty moody when it comes to clothes. I just feel like whatever really jumps out at me or Marnie might have an idea or something creative. We like to try something new usually, so we just go for it. It’s pretty spontaneous. I love it when I’m able to wear color on camera. I think that it reads beautifully.”

What’s your ritual right before you go on air?
“We’re usually rushing! The ritual is we’re doing last-minute touchups. Lip gloss, make sure the hair is in the right place, everything is covered — pulled up, pulled down — like everything is right. We usually are like scatterbrains in here. And taking pictures!”
